Getting Around Brisbane

For people traveling into Brisbane, the most efficient way of getting into the city may be to fly into Brisbane Airport. Brisbane Airport is the only passenger airport that serves the area and is the third busiest airport in all of Australia. Each year, the airport handles around 175,000 different flights that bring around 20 million passengers through the airport. Over twenty different airlines operate flights out of the airport and it is a major hub for Jetstar Airways, Skytrans Airways, and Qantas. Direct flights are available to and from all major cities in Australia as well as several different destinations in Asia and the United States.

While taking a flight into Brisbane may be the quickest option, other options for getting into the city include driving or taking a bus. Several major freeways go right through the city, which gives immediate access to the city from the suburbs and can be used to connect to any other city in Australia. National bus lines offer several different routes that leave from and arrive to Brisbane several times per day.

Once inside the city, Brisbane offers several different public transportation options. For people in the city limits, the most expansive public transportation system is the rail system. The train system in Brisbane is operated by TransLink. The multiple train lines in the city serve over 50 million passengers each year. The train lines are very densely packed in the city, which makes getting into the downtown central business district very easy for anyone that lives in the Brisbane city limits.

For people that live in some of the outer lying communities, taking the bus could be the best option. The expansive bus system in Brisbane can be used for travel within the city, but it is the ideal choice for people that are coming into downtown from the suburbs. The bus system has a total fleet of over 1,000 buses that run along dozens of different bus lines located in and outside of the city.

With Brisbane's location along a major river, another popular transportation option is to take a ferry. Ferries run every few minutes to cross the Brisbane River. The popular CityCat Ferry system is used for public transportation, but it is an ideal option for tourists that are looking for a fun and affordable way to sightsee.
